I have to admit, though it is about as heavy-handed as it could have been, it nevertheless succeeds somewhat in making you feel sorry for the characters by sheer force of repetition. The main character is the family patriarch, Jurgis Rudkus, who goes from being an honest working man beaten down by the cruel meat industry to a cynical and selfish criminal to finding the light of socialism, which he then espouses with religious zeal. Every single horrible thing that you can imagine happening then proceeds to happen, and so, through soul-crushing poverty, crime and death, the family breaks up. The book tells the story of a Lithuanian family who comes to America and finds work in the Chicago meat-packing industry. And so he wrote this book to explain why it–and ultimately the entire capitalist system–was corrupt and evil. Upton Sinclair did not like the meat-packing industry. I just finished reading The Jungleby Upton Sinclair, and it has much the same problem. Last year, I blogged about Sinclair Lewis’s novel It Can’t Happen Here, and mentioned how terribly unsubtle its political commentary is. Maybe there’s something about the name “Sinclair”. I hit the brakes when I happen upon one of my all time favorite VHS rentals from my youth, 1990’s Dark Angel (aka I Come in Peace), the sci-fi buddy-cop romp starring Dolph Lundgren, Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley, Matthias Hues, Jay Bilas, and David Ackroyd, and directed by Craig R. Boarding my private bullet-tram deep into my oceanic West Coast vault housing my top-secret Blu-ray collection for the safety of collectors everywhere, I’m looking for something to watch that’s holiday-appropriate, but not too family-friendly. It’s fall, and that means the holiday season is upon us. The individuals he describes, daily enduring hunger, humiliation and, perhaps most vividly, abject boredom, are invariably treated with respect and a certain dignity. His vivid reportage elevated the evidence of what we know about the root causes of homelessness and poverty, and their impact on people who experience them, psychological as well as physical. His first hand account of poverty, hunger, squalid doss houses and day-to-day survival by residents of the slums of both cities challenged contemporary attitudes to social problems. George Orwell set the tone for this distinctive style of social commentary - originally chosen, meticulously researched, reported with clear-eyed candour - in his first full-length book, Down and Out in Paris and London, published in 1933. Trigger warning: Please note that this blog post briefly mentions sexual assault, anti-semitism and brutal behaviour. Space Ghost is cool because it mixes Sci-Fy with Fantasy. And you just hunts her around, scaring the shit out of her only thinking about yourself and your own feelings. Why do you think she wants anything to do with you?! What have you to offer?
